Greek Civil Servant Receives US International Public Administration Award

The American Society for Public Administration and the National Academy of Public Administration recognizes outstanding practitioners who have spent most of their careers in public service.

This year, the International Public Administration Award goes to a Greek civil servant, who is recognized for being the best public sector member in the world.

The above mentioned distinction has been awarded annually since 1983 to a non-American academic or professional person who has “made a difference” in public administration for a sustained period of time.

Professor Panayiotis Karkatsoulis of the Hellenic School of Public Administration in Athens has been serving the public sector for over 20 years, while he has also worked as scientific advisor at many Ministries in Greece and currently as a public advisor at the Greek Ministry of the Interior.

Mr. Karkatsoulis claimed that a permanent position in the public sector does not mean laziness at work. He also supported the radical reduction of the current 4,000 public businesses in Greece but remains very skeptical over the new reserve measures implemented today.

Mr. Karkatsoulis has co-authored the recent OECD Report along with 198 persons from 16 committees and 15 ministries, underlining that it is high time to implement the necessary reforms in Greece.

The award will be presented on the 2nd of May 2012 in Las Vegas.
