Archbishop Demetrios Meets with Turkish PM in NY

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America had a “closed press” meeting last Friday evening with Turkish PM Recep Tagip Erdogan within the General Meeting of the UN in New York.

The meeting was hosted in Peninsula Hotel and the Archbishop thanked PM Erdogan for his decision on returning confiscated properties to non-muslims. TheTurkish PM answered that he did not pass the relevant bill in order to get something in return.

He also said that “returning confiscated properties to their owners was a matter of justice and doing the right thing. It was just a coincidence that it happened during AKP’s leadership”. Furthermore, the PM told Demetrios that he expects Greece to follow Turkey’s example in matters concerning religious minorities.

A member of the Greek delegation told Edogan that Greece is going through a very rough time and if Turkey would financially support its neighboring country that could mean the latter’s easier access to the EU.

The meeting was also attended by Dr. Antonios Lymperakis, head of the religious order ‘The Archons of Saint Andrew’, Mr. Emmanouel Jacharis, Vice President of the Archdiocese Council, businessmen Mr. Ioannis Katsimatidis and Mr. Denis Mehiel and Mr. John Grossomanides, new Supreme President of AHEPA.
