15 Runners from Greece to Run Chicago Marathon

A team of 22 runners in this year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon – including 15 coming from Marathonas, Greece – will run to raise money for the Hellenic Foundation‘s Psychotherapy & Counseling Charitable Fund. The philosophy at Hellenic Foundation is that in the marathon of life, every step counts. Individuals need support as they make their way through their personal race.  Hellenic Foundation provides that support.

Hellenic Foundation has been through an exciting transition, modernizing and reviving the organization and developing new programs that best serve individuals and families of all cultures while perpetuating Ancient Greek values. Through the participation in the marathon, individuals and families in need of assistance yet lack the financial resources, will have the opportunity to engage and participate in the therapeutic process.

Psychotherapy & Counseling is one of Hellenic Foundation’s programs which assists people who have difficulty navigating their course in life. This includes depression, anxiety, addiction, disabilities or any of life’s challenging situations. They provide educational programs, psychotherapy and counseling to support our clients in the steps needed to lead a healthy, productive life.

In support and appreciation of Hellenic Foundation’s cause, the Greek team and the Mayor of Marathonas, Iordanis Louizos will be bringing the Marathon Flame to Chicago.  Mayor Rahm Emanuel has helped to bring about this wonderful opportunity for Hellenic Foundation, Bank of America Chicago Marathon and the City of Chicago. The Marathon Flame will be lit on October 6 in Greektown. City and community officials will be on hand to mark this historic event in Chicago.

October 9 is Race Day. Greektown is at Mile 16 of the race, and a cheering station will be set up to for all to cheer on the the team and all the runners. The team will be easy to identify, as they’ll wear shirts with the Greek flag and HF’s footprint logo. The National Hellenic Museum will be part of the Race Day festivities. There will be all sorts of activities, including a children’s craft table where kids can make their own Athenian shield.

In conjunction with the marathon and associated events, throughout the month of October, the museum will host an exhibition entitled“The Marathon: Fact, Fiction and Pheidippides.”
