Benefit for 6 Year-old with Neuroblastoma

The Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Demetrios in Elmhurst has designated its Second Annual Taste of Greece Fall Glendi, September 24-25 as a benefit for the growing medical expenses of Theofanis Yianas. He is an altar boy and student at the church’s Pythagoras Children’s Academy, battling Neuroblastoma.  The benefit coincides with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Neuroblastoma is typically diagnosed by the age of 5 and occurs in approximately 1 out of 100,000 children. It is slightly more common in boys. The cause of the tumor is unknown, but by the time it is diagnosed, it will already have spread.

In addition to Greek food and sweets, there will be plenty of activities for the whole family. Saturday’s entertainment will feature the “Saint Demetrios’ Got Talent” Show, plus pony rides, music and dancing, and a visit by Chicago Bears legend Steve “Mongo” McMichael. On Sunday, enjoy a fabulous lunch, petting zoo and moon jump, plus a performance by the Dionysos Adult and Junior Dance Troupes.

The event kicks-off the community’s annual and month-long Dimitria Celebration, honoring patron Saint Demetrios.
