Harvard Establishes Greek Culture Awards

The Harvard University, Department of the Classics George Seferis Chair has established an International Award for Greek Culture. Professor of Modern Greek Studies and Comparative Literature at Harvard University Panagiotis Roilos, and Dimitris Yatromanolakis, who holds joint appointments in the Department of Anthropology and Humanities Center at Johns Hopkins University while he is also faculty associate at the Department of the Classics at Harvard University, are behind the initiative.

The annual awards will be presented to works in three categories: poetry, Modern Greek prose and essay or scientific paper. In 2012 one additional category will be added, that of music/musicology. For poetry and prose, nominations must be only in Greek, while essays – scientific papers, nominations in English, German, French, Spanish or Italian, and Greek, will be accepted provided they refer to some aspect of Greek culture.

For the 2011 Awards, the deadline for submissions is September 30. The winners will be announced in November and the awarding ceremony is planned to take place in December at the Athens Concert Hall.
