Condolences to Cyprus from Washington, the UN and Diaspora

Officials from the U.S. government, the United Nations and the Greek American Community expressed their deepest sorrow and condolences to the families of victims, the leadership and people of Cyprus for the current tragedy on the island.

Meanwhile, U.S. media with reports from Nicosia and Athens focus on the “fatal explosion” at the naval base in Cyprus, where 12 died and dozens of people were injured. In all reports, it was mentioned the political and military responsibilities for the accident, the resignations of Minister of Defense and Head of National Guard and particularly the fact that the explosion took place in an ammunition storage installation by an Iranian ship seized by the Cypriot authorities in 2009, which was heading to Syria.

Also, emphasis was given on the statement of the government’s representative in Cyprus, Stefanos Stefanou, saying that ” The Republic of Cyprus has then acted on the basis of UN resolution and in consultation with the International Organization” and that “We are confident that we will make a full and thorough investigation of all matters regarding the retention of the material and how we came to this tragedy.” Mr Stefanou, excluded the possibility of sabotage or terrorism.
