The Consul of Education at the Greek Consulate in Chicago (CEG) and Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU), have entered into a partnership to provide educational opportunities for individuals who would like to learn how to effectively teach the Greek language and culture within non-public school settings. Mr. Nick Nikolidakis, responsible for this attempt, in his interview with the “National Herald”, gave more details about the program. It is a program of tutoring and certificating Greek educators of America to teach the Greek language in the Greek schools of America, starting in the Fall 2011 semester at Northeastern Illinois University of Chicago. The program will be funded with the sum of 75. 000 dollars from the “Theodoros and Errika Spuropoulos Foundation”, corresponding to the tuition fees of the first 20 candidates. When asked who can apply as a candidate of the program, Mr. Nikolidakis answered: “Anyone who has fulfilled the second academic year at the University”. Mr. Nikolidakis also said that the Ministry of Education in Greece is aware of this program. In a message read during a festival for the dispensation of the knowledge of Greek certificates long ago, it was mentioned that the Ministry of Education would proceed to a legislation that would allow to any educator from a national acknowledged university who has the fourth degree certificate of Greek knowledge, which is the highest degree one can get, could be hired as a teacher of the Greek language at Northeastern Illinois University of Chicago . Mr. Spyropoulos has signed a collaboration contract with the University and this program is subsumed in this collaboration, as well as the collaboration between the University and the Coordination Education Office, where Mr. Nickolidakis is responsible. Mr. Spyropoulos has stated that this program can be a model program for other states of America or even for other countries, too.
