The Magnesia Prefecture Argonauts Association, founded by expatriate Greeks in the U.S.A. renounced the anti-semitic statements of Metropolitan Seraphim of Pireaus. The members of the association argue that these statements: “are a direct attack to the democratic institutions, they offend the democratic feelings of the Greek people and generate hatred for other nations and religious groups”.
The association announced from its central office in Astoria, where 500,000 Greeks live permanently, that Metropolitan Seraphim’s words offend also the memory of Archbishop Damaskinos and Metropolitan Ioakeim. These religious figures sacrificed their lives in order to rescue Jewish compatriots from the Nazi’s.
On January 23rd, the Argonauts will honor once more the Greek Jews who were killed during World War II and the Greeks who risked their lives to rescue 85% of the Israeli community of Volos.
