This year the Resolution on Armenian Genocide (H Res 252) was not included in theĀ U.S. Congress plenary session agenda. The resolution characterizing the massive annihilation of over 1 million Armenians by the Ottomans during the World War I has not been scheduled to vote this Thursday.
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi did not schedule a vote on the Armenian Genocide Resolution on Wednesday on the last session before the holidays.Ā This substantially postpones the proposal until the beginning of the following year, when her approval will be even more questionable.
The White House and State Department exerted strong pressure against the vote, fearing that it would worsen bilateral relations with Turkey. Ankara had recalled its ambassador in Washington after the approval of the text by the U.S. House Committee in March.
Democrat representatives have been pressuring for such a resolutionĀ for years, but have never managed to lead any of their proposals to be subjected to a final voting. Supporters of the movement have committed to back the proposal in 2011.Ā However, voting in favor will be improbable since the control of the body will be regained by the Republicans in January as they won a great number of seats in midterm elections held in November.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan has warned Washington that if the resolution is adopted, bilateral relations will be seriously affected among NATO members. The Obama government argues that beyond this, the adoption of such a resolution by U.S. Congress is bound to derail the reconciliation process between Turkey and Armenia.
