John Katehis Murder Trial Begins Today

The trial for the teenager accused of stabbing to death the former NYC WABC-AM  news anchor/ reporter and ABC Radio News freelancer George Weber begins today. Greek-American John Katehis was 16 at the time of the crime.  He is accused of stabbing Weber 50 times after the two met through a Craigslist ad looking for someone to engage in sex for $60 USD. As the New York Daily News reports Katehis laughed out loud when a tape of his testimony to police was played in court.  The youth claims he was given alcohol and a substance alleged to be cocaine when he arrived at Weber’s Brooklyn apartment. Despite Weber being bound with duct tape before being stabbed, Katehis’ lawyer is claiming his client acted in self defense. The prosecution says it was Katehis who placed the ad on Craigslist looking for sex, and murder and robbery may have been a motive. Police found Weber’s body after ABC Radio contacted police when he did not show up for a scheduled news shift. The subsequent investigation led police to Katehis.
