Greek Movies at Chicago Film Fest

The 46th Chicago International Film Festival, featuring 150 films from 50 countries, will run from October 7-21. Two Greek films will be featured.

Black Field, (Mavro Livadi), directed by Vardis Marinakis, takes viewers to 17th-century Greece, where a wounded slave-soldier takes refuge at a cliffside convent, forever changing the life of Anthi, a convent resident. Quiet and solemn, even for a nun, Anthi is not all she seems to be. Rooted within the epic scope of historical Greece during the Great Turkish War, Black Field elegantly focuses on the near-mythic love story between Anthi and the soldier, using remarkable, eerie visuals to chronicle her path to freedom and self-discovery. The movie is in Greek with English subtitles.

The Building Manager, (O Diaheiristis), tells the story of fiftysomething Pavlos, a husband and father, who takes over the responsibilities of his elderly mother’s job as the manager of a crumbling apartment building. Infatuated with a young shopkeeper and plagued with problems at home and at work, he soon finds himself in the grips of a full-fledged midlife crisis. Pairing understated humor with emotional insight, The Building Manager is a compassionate portrayal of the risk involved in surrendering completely to the vagaries of love. Directed by Periklis Hoursoglou, the film is in Greek with English subtitles.

Greek films have typically found their way into the local film fest, which has been referred to by film critic Roger Ebert as “being a lifeline for new directors, films, and national cinemas.” Each year the festival specializes in showcasing the greatest directors, the freshest visions, and the strongest cinematic stories. The silent star Celluloid hero, with her heavily mascara-ed eyes – commemorated in the fest’s official logo – continues to be the Festival’s guiding vision since 1964.
