U.S. Army Sargeant Tiffany Dalagelis Leads Support for Afghan Women

Under the leadership of U.S. Army Sgt. Tiffany Dalagelis, a group of female army corps supports women in Afghanistan who live under the Taliban regime.

According to The National Herald, Tiffany Dalagelis originates from Philadelphia.  She works in Afghanistan with five other women.  All are officers of the U.S. Army in the the six member: “Female Engagement Team of Provincial Reconstruction Team Farah”.   Three officers represent the U.S. Navy, one represents the U.S. Air Force and another represents USAID.

The mission is to help the Provincial Afghan government organize programs and offers opportunities to women.

This mission originated when  USAID officer Marsa Michel received a event changing request from Shib Koh District Sub-Governor Abdul Haidari.  His request was to gather women in his district and conduct a female only group to address their issues and concerns.

The turnout of local women was extraordinary. All women spoke about their personal problems and the challenges that women have to face in the region of Farah. One brave teenager Zahra read a list with the demands of the women. The general issues were education and job concerns.

Initially, explaining that our intent was to evaluate the communities concerns rather than individual needs was a challenge. But eventually they understood it, and our next meeting will be focused on the solutions they come up with that address the women’s issues,” said Dalagelis.

The issues and concerns addressed will be forwarded to Haidari who has the ability to authorize the specific changes requested by the women based on his authority as sub-governor. Issues that can’t be resolved at the district level will be directed to the provincial level if necessary.
