George Demos Tells Fox News We Must Rebuild St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at Ground Zero

Greek-American Conservative Republican Candidate for Congress in the First District of New York George Demos appeared on Fox News recently.  Demos called on The Port Authority’s Executive Director Chris Ward to immediately stop his bureaucratic roadblocks and that the rebuilding of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at Ground Zero must be a top priority.

Demos stated that it was disgraceful that the Port Authority of New York/ New Jersey reniged on a deal with Church officials and for over a year has refused to meet with the leaders of the only house of worship actually destroyed on September 11, 2001. Demos noted that our government is spending billions of dollars to rebuild the infrastructure of Ground Zero, yet no plan exists for rebuilding the Church. Demos reiterated that our Judeo-Christian values are under attack in our nation and that rebuilding the Church transcends any particular denomination.

Demos also renewed his call to investigate the sources of funding for the newly proposed mosque near Ground Zero, given the serious questions about the background of the mosque proponents.

Demos concluded that we owe it to the memory of the 3,000 victims of September 11, 2001 including the 168 from Suffolk County; many of whom prayed at St. Nicholas, to rebuild the Church

  1. The Church in question Jason was THERE before the attack of 9/11/01.

It's not a mark of conquest like a mosque is.

It's not about republican or democrat it's about God having people THERE. The Church of St Nicholas was part of that neighborhood.

  2. Unfortunately, Paul,,,,Like Jason there are a lot of ignorant people today that do not know about History. St Nicholas was one of the very first Church at Ground Zero in the turn of the Century for the Immigrants of Greece. Why is it that everything we as Greeks do or any other Immigrant Country, it has to be either Republican or Democrat? The Church was also burn down while the last of the building from the World Trade came down. People, lighten up, open up a history book or even do some research to open your eyes.

  3. Paul, if the proposed Park 51 center is being by people who clearly deplored the attacks, then why do you conflate them with the attackers and call it a "mark of conquest"? Yes, the church is part of that neighborhood, but it is also located immediately across the street in an area with 26 separate rebuilding projects are taking place. Demos' characterization that the PA "reniged" on the plan isn't a fair characterization of what actually transpired either. Many facets of those 26 projects have changed, and that does necessarily impact what ultimately happens at the ST. Nicholas site. Yet the pols like Demos will attempt to draw their false analogy and proclaim that "Judeo-Christian values are under attack", just to garner attention, rather than be honest.

  4. Athens Archbishop Christodoulos said we deserved 9/11 (ISBN 960-252-007-8). Greeks must not be allowed to revive their tsar-build islamo-soviet temple on world trade center sacred ground! Greece has always been a state conduit of islamosoviet terrorism. They don't let us preach the Gospel in their land, so why should they have temples here? On the Thursday before Easter Greeks chant pogrom inciting Beatitudes against "godslaying lawless Jews"in Greek, but change it to "Assemby of Jews" in English. They removed American Archbishop Iakovos because he was too American and Jerusalem Patriarch Irineos because he was too friendly with Israelis. Old witches who used to work at diners until they dropped now slip "Elder Protocols" and other terror claptrap in the pews. When I was growing up priests, would bathe, shave, wear pants – Robed, bearded, stovetopped priest is terror sympathist by definition. Greece was only euronation not to vote for 1947 Israel creation. In such time of war, we should insist that any public assembly of more than ten mandatorily be only in English! We have freedom of worship and speech, but not language. These heathen necromantic iconolaters have the nerve to ban Psalm 150 organs? America was always Judeo-centric. Columbus set sail with shiploads of Jews the day after the Spanish Inquisition expelled Jews. The Plymouth Pilgrims were followers of Cromwell who brought the Jews back to England. God helps those who help the Jews.

  5. This isn't about Muslims, Orthodox or Greeks. This is about an established community that was doubly hit by 9/11. They lost Friends and relatives, work, their main place of worship, and community. Any place of worship, any religion or domination is a huge support for those who attend. In some cases, it not only is fellowship, but their source for physical (food, clothes, financial help), emotional (friends and people who listen and care) as well as spiritual support. This community suffered enough! It SHOULD be helped. And I believe this if it had been a Jewish, Hindu or Shinto temples, any other churches (not just Greek Orthodox), Sihk, Druid or Wiccan religious sites, or even a previously existing Mosques(I understand that there was not one existing there already, but if there had been) that had been distroyed…. It should be and have been rebuilt by now, as a support for the community.
