Chicago: Greek restauranteur accused in check-kiting scheme out on bail

The owner of a Chicago restaurant chain who’s charged with defrauding two banks is being released on bond.
Cook County sheriff’s officials say Nick Giannis (photo) is expected to leave Cook County Jail on Friday. He’ll be fitted with an electronic monitoring device.
Giannis is owner of the Boston Blackie’s restaurant chain.
He’d been held on $2 million bond since he was charged in April with felony theft, along with his son and a restaurant employee.
Prosecutors allege the Giannises deposited checks from different banks into accounts at two banks. They then cashed the checks before it could be discovered the accounts had insufficient funds.
A judge reduced his bond to $500,000, and family members have posted the required 10 percent.
