Ancient Greek Myth Moves to the High Wire

“Hephaestus: A Greek Mythology Circus,” presented Lookingglass and Silverguy Entertainment is currently playing at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Productions of the show in 2005 and 2008 were sold-out hits at the Lookingglass Theatre.

Hephaestus brings together the world’s top circus performers, including members of Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Brothers and the Wallenda Family. Billed as a “must-see circus event,” the show presents amazing circus artistry. Its “death-defying circus retelling” is the product of the imaginations of renowned circus artist Tony Hernandez and Lookingglass Artistic Director of New Work Heidi Stillman, who created and directed the show, which is co-produced by Silverguy Entertainment.

The creators took the myth of Hephaestus and translated it into a one-ring circus, including premier acts from aerialists to hoopers. Chicago Critic says “this show combines simple storytelling with amazing feats of strength, visual spectacle, and a finale that will literally take your breath away. It contains the grandeur and magic of the ‘Big Top,’ in an intimate setting that is difficult to find.  This show is a must-see.”

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus is known as the son of Zeus and Hera, and served as the blacksmith of the gods. Worshippers of Hephaestus were typically from the manufacturing and industrial centers of Greece, primarily in Athens. He crafted much of the finely-wrought metal work that appears throughout Greek myths, including Hermes’ winged helmet and sandals, Achilles’ armor, Eros’ bow and arrow and more.

The reviews have been very positive. The Wall Street Journal called it “explosive, dangerous and dazzling,” while the Chicago Sun-Times referred to it as a “seamless, ingenious and altogether stunning mix of circus arts, music and theatrical storytelling – Highly Recommended.” The Chicago Tribune called it “a top-drawer, post-modern, intimate circus show.”  Time Out Chicago stated “this is a show for all to see.”

The run has been extended through June 6 at the Goodman Theatre’s Owen Bruner Theatre in Chicago.
