Record price for watercolour of Rhodes at Sotheby’s

222A watercolour by Joseph Mallord William Turner R.A., which depicts the walled ancient city of Rhodes, was recently sold for $140,500 at an Old Master Drawings auction held at Sotheby’s in New York. Speaking about the painting, Emmeline Hallmark, the head of Sotheby’s Early British Paintings department, said: “In this wonderful atmospheric watercolour, Turner seems to bring the port of Rhodes to life, through a combination of light, colour and artistic detail”.
The painting had been initially appraised at between 46,100-59,500 euros, or $70,000-90,000. The view chosen by the artist shows the ancient city of Rhodes bathed in soft light.
