Greek-American Democrat and New York State Assemblyman Michael Gianaris has announced that he will stand for a seat in the New York Senate. Gianaris was elected to the New York House for the first time in 2000 and is considered one of the upcoming Democratic officials in the Big Apple. He has stated he plans to run for the State Senate once George Onorato retires.
Thirty-nine-year-old Gianaris was born in New York of parents who hail from Kalabryta in Greece. His father, Nicholas Gianaris is a professor of economics at Fordham University in New York. Gianaris is supported by many officials of the Democratic party, as well as by Greek-American business people.
