George Stephano poulos to co-anchor ‘Good Morning America’

Orange High School graduate George Stephanopoulos is the new co-anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He starts Monday.
The appointment was widely reported by several media outlets this morning, and ABC is expected to make an official announcement this afternoon.
Diane Sawyer is leaving ABC’s morning program Monday to prepare for her Dec. 21 debut as the anchor of ABC’s “World News Tonight.”
Stephanopoulos, who joined ABC News in 1997, has been the front-runner to replace Sawyer on “Good Morning America” from the beginning. The only holdup has been his reluctance to give up his Sunday news-discussion show, “This Week.”
He will co-anchor “Good Morning America” with Robin Roberts. No replacement has been named for “This Week.”
Sawyer will anchor “World News Tonight” Dec. 21 and 22, then go on vacation and start her official run as Charles Gibson’s anchor replacement in January.
ABC also is expected to announce that “Good Morning America” news anchor Chris Cuomo will co-anchor “20/20” with Elizabeth Vargas. Juju Chang will be his replacement on the morning show.
Before joining ABC News, Stephanopoulos, 48, was President Bill Clinton’s communications director and senior adviser. An altar boy at his Greek Orthodox church in suburban Cleveland, Stephanopoulos got his first taste of politics as an aide to Cleveland congressman Ed Feighan.
