Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks Establishes New Scholarship at UCLA for Greek Studies

The UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture has said it welcomed “with enormous pleasure” a new scholarship backed by a leading Greek-American businesswoman.

The Vlahakis-Hanks undergraduate scholarship, supported by Earth Friendly President and CEO Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks will be awarded to students who demonstrate leadership in Hellenic causes, environmental issues, or community empowerment.

Organizers say the establishment of this scholarship, linked to the UCLA SNF Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture, reflects the values of Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, and demonstrates her commitment to fostering future leaders in the community.

Vlahakis-Hanks heads up Earth Friendly Products, the leading U.S. manufacturer of green household and commercial cleaning products.

Besides being one of the greenest companies in the United States, the award-winning firm has also been recognized as a top employer. It manages to run a very profitable operation, while it pays its employees a minimum wage of $17 per hour.

Earlier this week, the firm also unveiled a new partnership with the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Earth Friendly Products, the maker of the Ecos range of green cleaners,  committed $100,000 to the ACS and created the ‘Go Green for Pink’ campaign.

From Sept. 1 through Oct. 31 this year, Earth Friendly Products will contribute $1 to ACS breast cancer programs and research for every 100-ounce or larger bottle of Ecos laundry detergent sold.

Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks said: “Fighting to protect our health and the health of our planet has been the core of our mission for 50 years.”

“I lost my own mother to breast cancer several years ago, and I want to do everything I can to help improve women’s health and well-being, including my health and the health of my daughter,” she added.
