Greek Community Rallies Around Popular Cypriot Musician

Renos Efthimiou

Immigration agents have arrested a well-known Cypriot musician — popular among New York’s Greek-American community — for apparent visa irregularities.

Renos Efthimiou, a drummer who has participated in numerous Greek-related festivals and concerts in Astoria and elsewhere, is being held at the Seneca County Jail, Ohio.

According to a report in the National Herald, the president of the Cyprus Federation of America Philip Christopher has already hired lawyers to defend Efthimiou and seek his release.

Christopher has already offered $2,000 as the retaining fee required for a judge to release Efthimiou on bail.

In addition, he is organizing a fundraiser to cover legal costs this coming Monday (March 12), at Dionysos Restaurant in Astoria (23-15 31 Street).

“Renos had come to study in New York. For economic reasons, he stopped studying and did not manage to renew his student visa. He is now paying the price,” Christopher told the National Herald.
