Greek-American Judge Slams ‘Extreme’ Trump

The ‘Dreamers’ program gave legal protection to around 800,000 people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

A senior Greek-American judge has slammed what he called “vicious” remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump on immigration.

Nicholas Garaufis, Senior US District Judge for the Eastern District of New York.

Brooklyn Federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis told Justice Department attorneys this week that Trump’s words had affected two lawsuits he was hearing which were trying to stop the government’s axing of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

DACA is more popularly known as the “Dreamers” program and gave legal protection to around 800,000 people who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

Campaigners alleged the president’s axing of support for the scheme in September was based on prejudice.

In comments reported by the Associated Press on Tuesday, Garaufis – whose grandparents were Greek immigrants – said Trump’s “drumbeat” of anti-immigrant statements was extraordinary: “It’s extreme. It’s recurring. It’s vicious,” he told a legal hearing.
