Greek-American Artist Tina Psoinos Pays Tribute to Legendary Greek Women

In early December we met artist/ designer Tina Psoinos and interior designer Paris Kostopoulos during their art installation in a Midtown Manhattan storefront location on 58th Street.

When we met them, only the front areas were installed. On a trip back to the East Coast we went back to see the entire show that has many different aspects to it.

One of them is a Greek Edition.

Within the main theme “My Life with the Wave”: a body of work depicting the female entity through pop culture, there is a section dedicated to Greek female icons.

The Greek celebrities in the art show are Elena Nathanail, Aliki Vougiouklaki and Maria Callas.

Each one is placed next to an abstract painting of “fireworks” and together they form a cohesive group finished with a graffiti spray-painted heart on the wall and signed in street art fashion.

Tina explained that the series is ongoing and it will include many more Greek ladies.

In our question why those three, Tina answered that over the years she has been gathering material about the women that have inspired her in preparation for this work, but during the actual artwork execution, she follows what inspires her at that very moment.

“At some point I was listening to the song “San me kitas”, so naturally at that point I completed Elena’s piece,” and she continued “In that fashion, when I was listening to an aria by Callas and another song by Aliki, I worked on their pieces.

Now, I have to reveal one of my artistic process secrets; I listen to music while creating and I have to loop the song that inspires me until each work is competed.

No one around me is happy about that; no wonder I keep receiving earphones as gifts.”

Tina told us how she got this prime location for her pop up show.

“The corner storefront was generously provided by Brooklyn based manufacturer, Urbangreen Furniture, a new venture by Greek-American owners, and will be transformed into their new Manhattan showroom later on this year.”

To our question if the space is intentionally “unkept” she answered, “I was immediately attracted to the raw, industrial and mismatched quality of it, at its current pre-construction state, and to the possibility of using it almost as I would an outdoor space. And so I turned it into a LES street scene, if you will, not sterile and with a lot of character.”

You can visit the exhibit at 1104 2nd Avenue @NE corner of 58th Street by appointment.

Tina is the recipient of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award and her next exhibit will be in Barcelona this coming April 2018 in the “Women seen by Women” photography show.
