Florida Greek-American Republican congressman Gus Bilirakis has joined prominent Greeks around the world in denouncing Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s comments in Athens, about a renegotiation of the 1923 Lausanne treaty, ruling relations between Greece and Turkey.
As Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Affairs and the Congressional Hellenic-Israel Alliance, Congressman Bilirakis released the following statement on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent comments, during his historic visit to Greece.
“President Erdogan continues to test the resolve of the United States and the rest of the international community to hold his regime accountable for sowing regional chaos and discord that undermines and threatens NATO ally, Greece”.
“Erdogan’s renewed inflammatory rhetoric and lack of respect for long-standing international agreements is cause for serious concern and does nothing to advance regional interests much less provide for stability and prosperity.”
“The United States must remain steadfast in its support of Greece, continue to condemn flagrant acts in violation of international law, and be prepared to respond quickly and forcefully to transgressions of international law through targeted sanctions and foreign aid restrictions,”
