Chris Begley, associate professor and director of the anthropology and sociology programs at Transylvania University in Kentucky is spending his summer break from teaching exploring shipwrecks in Greece.
Begley will be joining a team of researchers for around oneĀ month in theĀ Fourni archipelago in Greece. There he will be assisting in the exploration of around 22 shipwrecks that were discovered last September as a result ofĀ a collaboration between the Greek Hellenic Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities and Florida-based RPM Nautical Foundation.
āLooking at where itās positioned on a map, it makes sense that it would be a part of trading routes,ā Begley told the Lexington Herald Leader. āWhether we will get something unexpected farther afield is yet to be seen. If we were going to see something unexpected, this would be the place.ā
In 2012 Begley wasĀ named aĀ National Geographic ExplorerĀ and one of the worldāsĀ 50 Most Adventurous MenĀ by Menās Journal in 2015. He is best known forĀ his work in documenting archaeological sites around the Mosquito Coast of Honduras and for beingĀ adventurous at spirit as Begley toldĀ Lexington Herald Leader,Ā āI tend to be attracted to places that offer a challenge.ā
