Transylvania University’s Professor Chris Begley to Join in Exploration of Ancient Shipwrecks in Greece

chris begleyChris Begley, associate professor and director of the anthropology and sociology programs at Transylvania University in Kentucky is spending his summer break from teaching exploring shipwrecks in Greece.

Begley will be joining a team of researchers for around oneĀ month in theĀ Fourni archipelago in Greece. There he will be assisting in the exploration of around 22 shipwrecks that were discovered last September as a result ofĀ a collaboration between the Greek Hellenic Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities and Florida-based RPM Nautical Foundation.

ā€œLooking at where itā€™s positioned on a map, it makes sense that it would be a part of trading routes,ā€ Begley told the Lexington Herald Leader. ā€œWhether we will get something unexpected farther afield is yet to be seen. If we were going to see something unexpected, this would be the place.ā€

In 2012 Begley wasĀ named aĀ National Geographic ExplorerĀ and one of the worldā€™sĀ 50 Most Adventurous MenĀ by Menā€™s Journal in 2015. He is best known forĀ his work in documenting archaeological sites around the Mosquito Coast of Honduras and for beingĀ adventurous at spirit as Begley toldĀ Lexington Herald Leader,Ā ā€œI tend to be attracted to places that offer a challenge.ā€

The discovery that Begley will be exploring has revealed shipwrecks that date back as far as 700 BC to 600 AD.
The shipwrecksĀ the excavationĀ focuses on are in a part of the sea known for sporadic violent currents and sheer cliffs and drop-offs, making the diving exploration more challenging for the divers.
Begley has been dedicated to diving since 2009 andĀ has evenĀ explored Kentucky’s waterways while usingĀ a 3D imaging device that he helped test and develop.
He will be back in Kentucky come fall to teach a new semester of students and will undoubtedly have engaging stories to recant about his adventurousĀ summer exploring shipwrecks in Greece.
