Greek Myth of Narcissus Revived in Astoria on October 9th

The Greek myth of Narcissus will be dramatized by several poets, singers and actors in Astoria New York, on Friday, October 9. The event is part of the Onassis Festival NY which takes place from October 8 to 11 and includes various lectures, as well as music and other performances.

The festival’s theme this year is “Narcissus Now: The Myth Reimagined,” the audience will be encouraged to reflect on the modern  “self-absorption” culture. POEMobile, a travelling entertainment vehicle, presented by City Lore, will project the poems into the night sky. Music and spoken word will tell the tales of Narcissus and other notable Greek myths.

In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a Hunter from Thespiae in Boeotia who was known for his beauty. He was the son of the river-god Cephissus and nymph Liriope. He was proud, in that he disdained those who loved him. Nemesis noticed this behavior and attracted Narcissus to a pool, where he saw his own reflection in the water and fell in love with it, not realizing it was merely an image. Unable to leave the beauty of his reflection, Narcissus drowned.

The event will take place at the Hellenic Federation’s Stathakion Center at 8 pm. Greek American poet Dean Kostos, winner of the Benjamin Saltman poetry award, will read some of his personal works, as well as other artists’ poems on the subject of narcissism.
