Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Co-chair of the Congressional Hellenic Caucus, today released the following statement calling for Greek debt relief:
“Now that the Greek and German parliaments have approved the reforms agreed to by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the Eurozone negotiators, it is critically important that Greece is given the opportunity to rejuvenate its economy. That is why I strongly support the IMF recommendations for debt relief and establishing a grace period for loan repayment. Without these, it is easy to imagine another financial emergency down the road.
“The Greek people have been suffering under a recession for years and austerity alone will only prolong this crisis. Economic stimulus will be required to restart the Greek economy and ensure that Greece can meet its debt obligations. I share my constituents’ concerns about the future of Greece and its people. The U.S. and Greece have always been strong allies. In the best interest of Greece and our European friends, I hope that the U.S. government will continue to support negotiations that finally begin to resolve the Eurozone crisis.”
