Greek Artist to be Featured in NYC’s Agora Gallery Exhibition

chelsea agora galleryChelsea’s Agora Gallery in New York City will feature the original work of Greek artist Varvara Liakounakou in the exhibition “Reconstructing Reality.” The exhibition opens on November 29 and continues until December 19. The opening reception will take place on the evening of December 4, from 6-8pm. Entrance is free and all are warmly welcomed to attend.

Reconstructing Reality creates a sense of exploration that cannot be denied. The viewer is able to go from the ephemeral to the figurative in just a few moments, only to be snapped back to an equally jarring duality between works of traditional embroidery and surreal landscapes. The contrast, though strong, is far from harsh, with each piece made entirely accessible by the expertise each artist puts into their own style and work, allowing the viewer to fully enjoy the entire range of art on display.

Magical and mystical, the work of Liakounakou portrays human couples with a spiritual transcendence. Utilizing the timeless medium of oil paints, she creates several transparent layers of material as a paint surface, which imbues her work with a poetic sense of beauty. Negotiating her medium with style and a focus on her chosen concentration, Liakounakou strives to convey the realities of mortal struggle. Blending abstract with realistic, she portrays her subject, the human figure, in the form of what she calls her “little people,” with a compassionate appreciation of the human condition. Expressively conjuring compositions that eloquently articulate the way in which individuals connect and communicate, Liakounakou seeks to suggest a peaceful harmony. “As a concept, couples reflect my fascination with the union of people,” she explained. “This is what I would like to be able to paint in such a way that its power will conquer all the weaknesses and wear and tear of life.”
