Remembering the Victims of 9/11, Including 39 Greek-Americans

911 Anniversary

Of the nearly 3000 people that perished on September 11, 2001 – a day that will not soon be forgotten – 39 were Greek-Americans. Today, 13 years later, the grim memories remain intense, as the pain experience by the families of those unjustly lost, who are nonetheless hoping for a better tomorrow for the entire world.

On the occasion of the 9/11 anniversary, a series of events will be held across the country and at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to honor the memories of those lost, reminding us that being alive is a gift.

American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a leading association for the nation’s millions of American citizens of Greek heritage and Philhellenes, has issued the following statement on the thirteenth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks:

“Today, on the thirteenth anniversary of September 11th, we remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks against our nation. We can never forget their sacrifice and our thoughts and prayers will always be with them and their families. Their memories will be eternal.

“In these times of tragedy, there are those individuals that were the first to respond, both emergency-responders and civilians alike, whom we salute today and thank for their brave acts of heroism.

“Today is a national day of service, and AHEPA encourages you to not only remember the victims of 9/11, but to also honor their memory by participating in acts of service to help strengthen your community. The AHEPA Family also looks forward to contributing to the building of Saint Nicholas National Shrine at Ground Zero.”
