Greek Man Sentenced for Trying to Sell Arms to FARC

Ionnis Viglakis tienen 52 años de edad.On Wednesday, Greek citizen Ioannis Viglakis was sentenced to 10 years in prison for trying to sell arms to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

The 54 year-old Greek national known as “Pablo” was arrested in Panama in August 2012 for trying to support a “foreign terrorist organization” which was not then identified.

The District Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York noted that Viglakis, after being extradited to the United States, had pled guilty before U.S. District Judge Katherine B. Forrest in December 2013 to attempting to provide material support to FARC.

Court documents revealed that Viglakis was meeting with an undercover U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent who had been presented as a FARC associate.

During those meetings, the documents say, Viglakis offered to provide the Colombian organization with assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and ground-to-air missiles, as well as ammunition, in exchange for cocaine and cash.

Viglakis had arranged the delivery of three rocket-propelled grenade launchers and live ammunition to the DEA agent in July 2012.

He had also paid the agent 8,500 euros (11,180 dollars) to make a shipment of cocaine to Spain on his behalf and offered to sell 200 hand grenades to the agent for more of the drug.
