Major League Soccer: Columbus Crew Interested in Dimitrios Papadopoulos

Dimitrios Papadopoulos, the top scorer of the 2013-14 Greek league, has reportedly been linked to MLS club Columbus Crew of Ohio for a transfer fee of $1.5 million.

The Greek soccer star played for Atromitos of Athens last year helping them finish 4th and securing them a spot for this year’s Europa League preliminary rounds. Gregg Berhalter, Columbus Crew’s head coach, neither confirmed nor denied the offer however stated that they have eyed the 33-year-old striker.

“We are searching for an experienced player given Crew’s relatively young squad” said the manager, “one who can lead the team when the tough gets going.”

Columbus Crew tends to cross balls in the box in an attempt to score, a desperation move in today’s football but a strategy that has worked for them.

“We don’t want to limit our ways of scoring. We can go bigger guy in the box, serve him the ball and have him head it in, or go smaller, more mobile and good on the one-on-one. Either way can work.”

Papadopoulos was also part of the 2004 European Cup triumph, when Greece beat Portugal in the final to become European Champions. He’s also played for Panathinaikos, Celta Vigo (Spain), Burnley (UK), Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) and Lecce (Italy).
