Greek Satellite in Space (video)

sateliteThe satellite L-Sat (Hellenic Satellite) created by a Greek scientific team led by Periklis Papadopoulos was  launched on Sunday from NASA facilities in Virginia, U.S.A.

The Greek satellite is being transported to the International Space Station (ISS) by an Antares rocket. It is estimated that it will arrive to ISS on July 16.

The Greek satellite was launched at 19.52 pm on Sunday (Greek time). The launch was originally scheduled for Friday night, but it was postponed due to bad weather. NASA with an official statement reported that so far everything is running smoothly.

“L-Sat” was designed and built by the Greek scientific team “Lamda Team” which is based in Silicon Valley, California. The motto of the team is “Greek Minds at Work”.

The Greek scientists aims to put Greece on the world map of Aerospace technology and emphasize that not only cutting-edge technology was used to build the satellite but also all the electronic systems were constructed from scratch, thus gaining an extremely valuable scientific knowledge for Greece.

The head of the team, Periklis Papadopoulos, Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the San Jose University in Silicon Valley, California, stated that Lamda Team is promoting and bringing out important Greek scientists.

Papadopoulos said that the Greek satellite was constructed for two purposes: to monitor all Greek merchant ships, particularly those sailing in the Indian Ocean and off the African coast, in order to help them protect themselves from piracy through the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and, secondly, for scientific purposes, more particularly for the first graphene test that will be conducted in space.
