The Olympic Air Boeing this Oregon Resident Calls Home

Bruce-Campbell,

An Oregon resident has turned a Boeing 727 of the Greek airline “Olympic Air” into a residence in a forest outside the suburbs of Portland.  Bruce Campbell started his project two years ago, in 2012 and after a lot of hard work he finally managed to make his dream come true.

Bruce Campbell has transformed the Boeing into a home and he spends six months of the year there. In 1999, the former electrical engineer had a vision to save retired aircrafts from becoming scrap metal by reusing them. “My goal is to change humanity’s behavior in this little niche,” he said.

Campbell was just  20 years old  when he bought for 23,000 dollars, the 10 acres on which his plane rests. He was originally planning to transform a freight van into a home but then he decided that a plane would be better.

Although he has spent about 220,000 dollars and two years of hard work, he is ready for his next project. He plans to buy and transform a Boeing 747 and move to Japan, where he also spends half of the year.

Campbell has created a website with details on rebuilding planes, however he’s not the only one using  aircrafts as houses. Several aircrafts have been made into homes in Texas, Costa Rica and the Netherlands.

AFRA, an organization that  focuses on sustainable end-of-service practices for airframes and engines, estimates that about 1,200 to 1,800 aircrafts will be dismantled globally over the next three years, while 500 to 600 will be retired annually over the next two decades. “AFRA is happy to see aircraft fuselages re-purposed in a range of creative ways,’ said the organization’s spokesman. Martin Todd.
