Greek Shipowners Strategize in Washington

beniamisThe strategic importance of Greece in international shipping and the prospects for the development in the maritime sector and other activities, were the main topic of discussion for the Union of Greek Ship owners. A delegation of the union, under Chairman Theodore Veniamis, underlined these topics in discussions that took place with U.S. government officials in Washington.

The Union delegation had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Smart, Special Adviser for Economic Affairs and Security President Obama. Subsequently, a number of meetings took place between the with the heads of private maritime organizations, such as the Global Maritime Council (World Shipping Council), the U.S. Navy Chamber of Commerce, the American Chamber of Commerce (Energy Institute) and the U.S. Grains Council.

The discussions were focused on the positive effects of the liberalization of market access for shipping services in negotiating trade agreements with the U.S. to EU and Pacific countries and issues related to the reduction of air pollutants emitted by ships and adopting monitoring mechanisms.
