US Press on Jack Lew’s Visit to Greece

LIOU_533_355The US press has published articles on the visit of the US Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew, to Greece on July 21. The articles said that the USA support Greece and that the US financial crisis depends on developments in Europe.

Wall Street Journal reported that Lew welcomed on July 21 Greece’s efforts to reform its economy and its financial situation, warning at the same time of the challenges that the country has to face.

According to the article, the US Treasury Secretary stated that the consistency with Europe remains at the top of his agenda, pointing out that the economic reform in the USA depends on the efforts that Europe makes to tackle the debt crisis.

As stressed out, Jack Lew’s visit to Athens took place a few weeks before Greece’s PM, Antonis Samaras, meets with the US President, Barack Obama, in the USA. This will be the Greek PM’s first visit with the American President.

Bloomberg noted that Lew referred to the difficult path that Greece has to walk on due to the financial crisis.

Lew arrived in Athens after the end of the meeting of the Group of Twenty (G-20) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors that was held in Moscow, Russia on July 20.

It was stressed that during his first visit to Greece after the outbreak of the crisis, Lew met with the Greek PM, Antonis Samaras, and the Greek Finance Minister, Giannis Stournaras, in order to discuss the possibilities of economic recovery and creating new job positions.

“Greece has come a long way over the last twelve months,” Samaras pointed out after the meeting.
