St. Demetrios, N.Y. Day School Will Close

DEMETRIS-JAMAICAThe Greek Day School of the Greek Community of St Demetrios Church of Jamaica in New York will close after a century of serving the community.  The decision was taken in an extraordinary general meeting on June 20, 2013, during which 30 members of the community voted to close of the school, 14 voted to keep it open and three abstained.

This is the fourth Greek day school to close in the last few years, including the Parish School of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Brooklyn, whose building was then rented and today operates as an independent charter school; the Greek Afternoon School of Transfiguration in Corona and the Three Hierarchs Parochial School of Brooklyn.

Archbishop Demetrios of America and the Office of Education are aware of the closure of the school, as it was revealed by a phone interview to the National Herald of the Head Priest of the community, Father Konstantinos Kalogridis.
