Obama Visits Greek Restaurant in Boston

OBAMA SANDWICH SHOP BOSTONChris and Thanassis Mantzourides, two brothers of Greek descent, had the chance to welcome US President Barack Obama in their restaurant, Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe, at 429 Columbus Avenue in Boston.

The President’s visit to the eatery was so unexpected that the owners said that “at the beginning we thought it was a joke.” They added: “We realized it was true when men of his security and of other services came inside and checked the restaurant.”

“President Obama came into the shop, ordered a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, mustard and French fries to go”, as Chris Mantzourides said. He added that “he waited patiently for his food to be prepared and left a $20 bill on the $8 tab. Obama was jacket less and with sleeves rolled up.”

Charlie’s owner described the US President to be “very happy, responsive, full of energy, he discussed with our customers, he greeted everyone personally, he accepted to be photographed with them.”

Charlie’s owners were born in Boston. Their father “came from Istanbul when he was nine years-old in order to escape the war.” Their father started the restaurant, along with a partner who died shortly after, and so he had it by himself until he gave it to his two sons. Now the two brothers “continue the tradition of fine food.”

Obama visited Boston on Wednesday, June 13, for less than three hours, in order to help Democrats fortify U.S Representative, Edward J. Markey’s campaign for the U.S. Senate.
