Seventy two members of Congress sent a letter to the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, calling him to give priority to the release of the two abducted Orthodox Archbishops in Syria, the Greek Orthodox Paul Yazigi, and the Syrian Orthodox Yohanna Ibrahim, who were kidnapped in Syria on 22 April, 2013.
“I am glad that 72 members (of both parties) of the House of Representatives joined together calling the Secretary of State to treat this issue as a matter of priority,” stated Congressman Brad Sherman, member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and of the Commission on International Religious Freedom, highlighting that, “We should do everything we can in order to ensure that the Christian and other religious minorities will have a secure future in Syria. I am deeply worried about the safety of the two Archbishops, and I appeal for their immediate and safe release.”
Similar statements were also made by other congressmen who signed the letter, such as Gus Bilirakis from Florida and John Sarbanes from Maryland, both of Greek descent.
