American Students Study Abroad in Greece

536188_558825497482216_139877079_nAmerican students who studied for some time at Greek educational institutions describe their own experience of living in Greece. They speak with emotion and nostalgia for the unique landscapes of the Greek islands, the unexpected beauty of Athens, the Christmas atmosphere and nightlife in Thessaloniki, the individual flavors of the Greek cuisine.

However, what seems to be most important, is that they describe Greece as a safe country, in contrast to certain stereotypes supported by a great deal of the U.S. media.

The Greek Embassy in Washington, gathered these stories as part of the Study Abroad in Greece campaign.

Every year, over 3,000 American students choose Greece as their study abroad destination. With over 60 study abroad programs and numerous cities participating, Greece is the 15th most popular study abroad destination in the US.

The inspiration for this campaign came from an American student named Megan Gould, who is currently on a study abroad program in Greece. Her letter was titled, Battling Preconceptions with Reality in Greece. She shared her story explaining how most of her teachers and peers were very hesitant about her traveling to Greece because of all the negative stereotypes currently surrounding the country.

However, Megan went on to tell how amazing her experience in Greece has been so far, and that what she sees is nothing like the media portrays.

The overarching goal through this campaign launched by the Greek Embassy in Washington, is to showcase positive aspects of life in Greece and how students benefited from spending time and studying there.
