hellenic-relief-foundationThe Hellenic Relief Foundation, a Diaspora group created to help the most vulnerable sectors of Greek society during the country’s crushing economic crisis has sent bounties of Easter goods to be distributed in varioius parts of the country for those who can’t afford them.

The Greek-American foundation distributed food in the Meropeion Elderly Home in Athens, on Holy Tuesday, April 30. About 480 families received packages with basic food, Greek Easter breads (tsoureki) and fresh lamb, as announced by the Foundation.

Diaspora businessman Kostas Zahariadis offered €22,000 for the Easter distribution in Athens, Perama, Keratsini, Tavros and Spetses island. The Hellenic Relief Foundation expanded the Easter distributions in Greek province thanks to the generosity of the Diaspora and organizations in the USA.

On the island of Corfu, food and lamb was given to about 170 families on Holy Wednesday, May 1. The biggest part of the cost was covered by Corfu Relief.

A total of about nine tons of food will be distributed during the Easter holidays, with more than 3,500 kilos of lamb included. The Easter distribution was enriched with wine, a gift from the Boutari Wine Company.

A Hellenic Relief Foundation’s representative reported that “the Diaspora rushes to help with brotherly love those who are in need because of the crisis that plagues our country.” He added: “Until today, our Foundation has donated more than $100,000 for the purchase and distribution of 90 tons of food.”
