John Siolas Receives Hermes Award

Dr. John G. Siolas

 Dr. John G. Siolas was honored with the Hermes Award given by the Federation of Hellenic American Educators  at the Dinner Awards Reception of the 22nd Hermes International Expo on April 13 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The award read,  “This, the Aien Aristevein (Ever to Excel) Awards is bestowed upon Dr. John G. Siolas for your life and for your ability to become a model to others and ensure them that the Hellenic cultural heritage and language are the cornerstone of your professional success. The Greek-American teachers of the Greek Schools that you have attended and everyone in the Greek-American community are standing today in front of you with pride and honor.”

He is an eminent scholar and author. Dr. Siolas has been an Associate Professor of Education, Graduate Division, School of Education and Psychology at Touro College for the past ten years. He has taught Modern Greek Language and Literature at St. John’s University since 2006.r He was born in Arcadia, Greece. His academic credentials include a B.A. from Marist College in 1973; M.S. in Education, SUNY in 1974 and a PhD. from New York University in 1984. During his academic career, he was a teacher at St. Basil’s Academy, Garrison, NY 1967-1975; Florida State University  Teacher Training Fellow 1976-78 and  Education Administrator for the Board of Education of the City of New York from 1975 – 2005.

His many works include books and numerous articles about Greece, children’s textbooks and bilingual education texts. He is active in many civic and cultural societies including the Greek Teachers Association, Prometheus, where he served as president in 1981-83. His many honors include the NY State Incentive Award 1974. He was named Educator of the Year (HAEA) in 1987 and selected by the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation to be a visiting professor for the spring 2007 semester at the University of Athens, Department of Linguistics.
