Greek Actress Set to Star in Solo Play in NYC

kafkasmonkey_slideshowGreek-British/American actress Kathryn Hunter is gearing up for her solo play, “Kafka’s Monkey,” in New York City next week. The performance is being presented by Theater for a New Audience at the Baryshnikov Arts Center.

The play, an adaptation of Franz Kafka’s “A Report to an Academy,” stars Hunter as Red Peter, a reluctantly civilized ape who, dressed in white tie, tails and a bowler hat, addresses a group of distinguished scientists who have asked to hear about “his” prior life.

Hunter, an Olivier Award winner and Complicité founding member, was born to Greek immigrants in New York. Her christened name is Aikaterini Hadjipateras, and she grew up in the U.K., where her family moved after leaving the U.S. She studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

“Kafka’s Monkey” begins previews Wednesday, April 3 at 2pm, and opens Thursday, April 4 at 8pm, running through Wednesday, April 17. Performances are at the Baryshnikov Arts Center’s Jerome Robbins Theater, located at 450 West 37th St., Phone: 646-731-3200.
