For March 25, Kerry Lauds Greek Austerity

John KerryMarking the 192nd anniversary on March 25 of Greece’s independence from Ottoman occupation, U.S. Secretary of state John Kerry noted the country’s crushing economic crisis but said the government is on the right track by continuing to push reforms that include hard austerity measures.

“The United States applauds Greece’s efforts to reform its economy and lay the foundation for a more prosperous future,” said Kerry. “We commend the people of Greece for your resilience and courage during these trying economic times. We stand in solidarity with you as you strive to restore economic growth and stability,” he sai.

Ahead of the March 25 military parade in Athens, Kerry pledged US backing for Greece, although it has mostly favored Turkey when there are clashes of interest between American policy and the two countries.  “As you celebrate this special day, know that the United States is a partner and friend. We look forward to deepening our cooperation in the years to come to foster a more secure and prosperous world.”
