Dimitris Dimitriou Passes Away

images1-100x100Dimitris Dimitriou, well-known Greek of the Diaspora and member of the Federation of Greek Associations of New York, died on February 20 of a heart attack.

He was born in 1954 in Halkidiki, and in the early 70’s moved to New York, where he pursued his studies in mathematics and business administration at Queens College of the New York City University. He received his M.A. from the Hofstra University and worked in the business field.

He was known as Jay – Jay and was an active member of the Hellenic-American community. He struggled for preserving the Greek language and protected Greek heritage. He was also actively involved in large demonstrations in New York and Washington concerning the Skopjean and Cypriot issues. For years he was the main announcer in the annual Greek parade on 5th Avenue in Manhattan.

Dimitriou was a founding member of many local organizations of the New Democracy party in New York. He is survived by his wife, Athena Lazarides-Dimitriou and 25-year-old daughter, Elizabeth.
