CYPRECO’s Show Of Khirokitia

Postcard Cypreco Nov. 4 '11 CYPRECO of America, Inc. will present the history and culture of Khirokitia, one of the most important pre-historic sites on Cyprus and of the eastern Mediterranean and part of the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List on March 8 at the Stathakion Cultural Center, 22-51 29th Street, Astoria, N.Y.

The event will feature the screening of an original documentary in English by Elena Maroulleti, Filmmaker and Executive Producer/Host of AKTINA FM and AKTINA TV.

Based on research and the archaeological finds, the featured documentary traces back the history of Khirokitia and also highlights the life, culture, customs and traditions of its first inhabitants.

Situated in the Maroni River, which stretches from the Troodos mountain range, the Neolithic Settlement of Khirokitia covers an area of approximately one and a half hectares on the slope of the hill.  Its remains and archaeological finds from ongoing excavations that stretch back to mid 1930’s and continue to date have shed a lot of light on the evolution of human society in this key region.

In recognition of its importance, UNESCO included Khirokitia in its World Heritage List in December of 1998 making it the third Cypriot site to be included in this prestigious list.  Khirokitia was preceded by the ancient sites of Paleapaphos and Kato Paphos and nine Byzantine churches in the Troodos mountain range which we included in the UNESCO list in 1985.

This program is under the auspices of the Cyprus Federation of America and it is supported in part by Arch Capital Services, Inc., the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs and The Cyprus Federation of America.  It is also supported by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York.  Media Sponsors: AKTINA FM and AKTINA TV.

CYPRECO is a non-profit cultural organization with a vibrant presence in New York’s cultural scene for over 30 years.  It is dedicated to the production of unique folk arts and cultural programs, including musical performances that promote and highlight the rich heritage and culture of Cyprus and Greece in America.  More information is available at  www.cyprecoofamerica.com.
