JHU Hellenic Students Association Creates Support Network

A Greek network of solidarity and mutual support was created by the Johns Hopkins University Hellenic Students Association. The institution’s priority is to provide information and work placement to Greek students, graduates of U.S. higher education institutions, and in general Greeks who seek work in the United States due to the economic crisis in Greece.

President of the JH Hellenic Students Association, George Petrocheilos, stressed in AMPE that: “A network is a powerful communication tool, offering important opportunities to help Greeks get through these tough moments that Greece faces right now.”

He highlighted that: “There is an increase in the number of Greeks who are trying to find jobs in the United States. They are either American citizens of Greek descent, that lived in Greece and now came back to the U.S., or students who have completed their studies in American universities and colleges and now seek work in America.”

Among others he also stated that any graduate of America’s top universities should automatically get a permanent job in the U.S.

He went on saying how he came up with this idea. “It all started when I met Aris Melissaratos, one of the biggest benefactors of the Greek community. Mr. Melissaratos, former secretary of Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Development, has been supporting Greeks for many years now. So he inspired me to start up this network, which originally had about thirty people and has now reached about seven hundred persons, mainly Greeks but also Americans who are interested in Greek issues and seem to be touched by the bad situation of our country.”
