NYC Performance to Commemorate Destruction of Smyrne

A special performance in New York City, titled “Abandon the Citizens,” will commemorate the destruction of Smyrne (also known as Smyrna) 90 years ago.

Based on the books “Common Word” (“Koinos Logos”) by Elli Papadimitriou and “Exodus” by the Greek Center for Asia Minor Studies, the performance will showcase the tragic end of the Greco-Turkish war, the expulsion of the Greek population from the Asia Minor coast and the destruction of Smyrne. Rare archival material will also be used.

Greek actresses Aktina Stathaki and Tina Yotopoulou created the piece, with Stathaki also directing. Between the Seas is producing. It will be performed in Greek with English supertitles.

The event will take place at Alwan for the Arts, 16 Beaver street, between Broad and Broadway, on the 4th FL, for one evening only on Thursday, December 13 at 7pm. Tickets are available at the door: $15 (general); $10 (Students/Seniors).
