A Greek Among Victims of Hurricane Sandy

Among the victims of Hurricane Sandy in New York was Nikolas Lourikas, 66, who was killed when a tree branch struck him on the head behind the Hauppauge Palace Diner on Route 347 in Hauppauge, Long Island. He was transported to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown where he was pronounced dead.

Eileen Lourikas told 1010 WINS radio that her husband was the type who was always willing to help people. “The world is going to miss Nick, because he was just a good soul, and there was not one person that knew him that didn’t love him,” she said.

A Greek-American family in Rockaway, Queens, were not injured but their house was flooded, among many in that oceanside community. The massive storm morphed into a huge and problematic system, killing at least 105 people in the United States. The hurricane caused billions of dollars in damage in the United States, destroyed thousands of homes, left millions without electric service, and killed over a hundred.

“One option is setting up Federal Emergency Management Agency trailer camps of the kind that existed after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005,” said George W. Contreras, Associate Director of the Emergency and  Disaster Management program at Metropolitan College of New York.
