Niarchos Foundation Gives $750,000 for Sandy Relief

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation said on Nov. 12 that it grant $750,000 to assist a variety of relief and aid operations in those areas of New York City that have been devastated the most by Superstorm Sandy. The funds will be directed to support local communities throughout Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

The amount will be given particularly to organizations offering mental health services, food, restoration to affected areas, reconstruction of public libraries as well as volunteering work.

More particularly, Safe Space offers community and mental health services for vulnerable children and families in Southeast Queens. Moreover, Citymeals-on-Wheels is working to deliver emergency meals throughout the hardest hit areas in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

Brooklyn Community Foundation’s Brooklyn Recovery Fund is a joint effort with the Brooklyn Borough President and the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. The Fund will respond to the immediate and long term impact of this natural disaster, and will serve as a flexible source of grant funding to local nonprofit organizations as the rebuilding efforts in Brooklyn’s most impacted neighborhoods progress over the coming weeks and months.

Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation has a strong network of volunteers across Staten Island, who are currently addressing immediate emergency needs. The Queens Public Library system has six libraries in the Rockaways (Queens) that have been badly affected by the storm. Some of these branches have been serving as community centers and social service providers.

Over the last 16 years, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation has donated more than one billion euros, ($1.27 billion) through 2.363 donations to non-profit organizations in 109 countries around the world, including many Greek and Diaspora causes.
