Congresswoman Shelley Levine Berkley, Nevada/Las Vegas – Iota Phi 1970, 1991 Delta Zeta Woman of the Year, was honored by the Daughters of Penelope at their National Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also honored was Dina Titus, former Congresswoman from Nevada.
Every other year the Daughters of Penelope hold an event known within their organization as the Salute to Women. Among the 24 notable recipients prior to this year were actress Betty White, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics, Senator Margaret Chase Smith, and Shirley Temple Black, actress and former U.S. Ambassador.
The Daughters of Penelope is an international Greek American philanthropic organization with an emphasis on scholarships and issues affecting women and children. “The objectives of the Daughters of Penelope are to promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, and Family & Individual Excellence. The Daughters of Penelope encourages and promotes loyalty to the country in which they live; cultivates the ideals and traditions of Hellenism; promotes opportunities of education,” the organization states.
Berkley was chosen by Nicky Stamoulis and Angie Speliopoulos because she exemplified the objectives of the Daughters of Penelope. She was the first in her family to graduate from college, showed civic responsibility, is family-oriented and cultivates excellence in herself as well as her children, the group said and is proud of her Greek heritage. In Congress, she works to increase access to affordable, high-quality health care for America’s families; encourages the development of alternative energy sources; and strives to provide the resources needed to meet the needs of U.S. veterans and military families.
