Greek Americans Unite and Send Letters to Congress Asking Liberation of Turkish-Occupied Cyprus

The Hellenic American Leadership Council is calling on Greek Americans to unite and encourage the support of American politicians to solve the Cyprus problem with the Turkish occupation on the island.

Turkey illegally invaded Cyprus almost 40 years ago and is trying to exploit its natural resourcesEndy Zemenides, executive director of the Hellenic American Leadership Council, stressed that this campaign is of great importance because Greek communities abroad should “make their voice heard.”

The Hellenic American Leadership Council will then gather the letters of the Greek Americans and send them to Congress, so that they back two resolutions concerning Cyprus and Turkey.

About 5,000 letters were sent to the senators in the first week that the campaign was announced on its Facebook page. Zemenides says he intends to reach 38,000 letters- “one thousand letters for every year of occupation.”

“We are fighting for the reunification of Cyprus,” he adds. “Greek and Turkish Cypriots have a history of living together for hundreds of years.”
